Part five: back at the start

For the first time in years I found myself with too much time on my hands.  I had enough in the bank to relax for a while and concentrate on deciding what I wanted to do with my life.  I tried starting a new game web site, getting a couple of projects together and doing some consulting but nothing really felt right.

I had too many ups and downs after the death of my daughter.  I had moved twice, changed careers and had a new son.  Too much, too soon.  I had good times, bad times, a bag load of regrets and even more good memories.

I wanted to be a full time father.

Nothing is more important to me than my family, and so decisions had to be made.  We moved back to my hometown of Buffalo New York and I spent two years not even loading up a computer game.

I was back at the beginning.  I started working in the broadband industry again and went back to being a game industry outsider.  I would have been happy to remain that way if not for a random web search.  In February of 2004 I stumbled upon an online community of people I knew from back in the Lum days.

I feel the interest in games building again.  I'm not sure if I would ever want to work in the industry again, but I'll always have an interest in the communities that form around them.

That's the story, for what it's worth.  Why the hell were you reading it any ways?
